Abstract
Engravings showed in this article, made by French artists of the XIX century, depicted images where nature, gender and race were linked with geographic determinism thoughts. Female portraits of nudity are in addition linked with the attributions of eroticism in the Caribbean that also help in the construction of otherness by creating imaginary scenes in Europe about the tropics and its inhabitants. None of the engraving’s authors ever visited the Caribbean. Engravings build an imaginary idea about the others in the Caribbean that is still reproduced in the contemporary historiography without dis- cussing in deep the origins and the purpose of those pieces of European perceptions of the climate, race and gender about the people that lives crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
