Abstract
The article presents more specially Eugenio María de Hostos' humanistic side, his esthetic sensibility, his ability to be moved and to vibrate in front of the most subtle promptings of art in whichever of its manifestations. It elaborates on Hostos' idea of art and establishes his attitudes and preferences, depending on art's different branches: in music he would prefer pure art; in poetry he is inclined towards engaged art. The author of this essay holds firmly to the vastness of Hostos' cognizance about painting, sculpture and literature, which, according to her, allows him to formulate sharp critical judgments, which are altogether fair and reflect his options as a sociologist and a politician with lofty, redeeming ideas about the Hemisphere.
