Abstract
This article, written in the style of a french essay, purports to analyze the mental operation of abstraction, in its three traditionally considered manifestations, namely, logical, mathematical and ontological abstraction. This, as a means to make the readers and their students conversant with the concepts that have been thought up in order to understand precisely the elements with which one ought to be familiar while executing the abstractive operations. After some pedagogical reflections, the essay ponders the importance of abstraction for the purpose of classification, then whiles in the main objective of mathematical thinking, namely, the study of relations between things, and finally in the need of analogical language and thought in order to be able to achieve the ontological or absolute abstraction.
