Abstract
Socorro Girón (1919-2005) was appointed official historian of the municipality of Ponce in 1973. The ad-honorem appointment was preceded by several research and publications on the origin and development of the city. Her masterpiece was Ponce, el Teatro La Perla y La Campana de la Almudaina (1992). She founded the Center for Puerto Rican Studies attached to the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce, which eventually was named the Socorro Girón Study Center, to honor her intellectual contribution.
