Abstract
Socorro Girón's multidisciplinary training allowed her to write biographies in which she intermingled history and literary criticism to offer a detailed, comprehensive and interpretive portrait of each of her biographed. She devoted efforts to studying nineteenth-century Puerto Rican poets (Alejandrina and Bibiana Benítez, José Gautier Benítez), journalists who are masters
of satire and humor (Luis Bonafoux, Julio Camba), a humanist doctor (Gregorio Marañón), Puerto Rican political characters (Ramón Marín, Manuel Zavala) and dramaturgists (Ramón C. F. Caballero, Ramón Méndez Quiñones). Each biography is contextualized in time, space, and content area. Following a rigorous research methodology Girón presents a radiography of nineteenth-century Ponce and Puerto Rico in terms of their cultural, political, economic, and social development. She tours us to witness the development of Spanish between centuries satirical-humorous journalism, and the rise of journalism in Ponce. A synthesis of the most important aspects of each biography is presented, both in content and methodology-wise.
