Abstract
Spanish Ana Caro Mallén and Mexican Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz belong to a select group of Baroque woman writers whose works have been preserved to this day. Being a laywoman and a nun, both ventured to write cloak and sword dramas, a comedy of intrigue subgenre, popular among the audience of the time, perhaps due to its transgressive nature. This paper compares Caro‘s Valor, agravio y mujer, and Sor Juana‘s Los empeños de una casa, in order to show the tricks and manipulations that the female characters, created by both playwrights, use to control the events of the plot in their favor, thus subverting the patriarchal order to achieve the marriage with the chosen male character.
