Abstract
The article examines the social and cultural dimension of reading, from the historical premises, tensions and disputes that cross the current debate on the ways of reading. From this contextual framework, the expansion of the scientific field of reading is revised, through the lines of continuity that represent the sociology of reading and the New Literacy Studies (NEL). In these ways of exploring reading, it reveals, on the one hand, a review of the access codes to this particular object of study, and on the other hand, the reconfiguration of their individual and collective sense, revitalized from an ethnographic and critical approach exploration of reading practices and the ways in which subjects construct identity with written texts.
