Abstract

Mass media has become a social institution unto itself due to its influence and dominance over the social landscape. News media in particular, through its agenda settings process, influences public opinion on matters of social relevance, such as the development, approval and implementation of social policies. This paper analyzes the relationship between the news media, the formation of public opinion, and the development of social policies related to vulnerable groups. It also discusses the role of social workers in this dynamic and provides recommendations on how they can intervene in the public debate for the benefit of the populations they serve.
