Comics, Punk, and Illustrations: A Look at Womens‘ Zines in Puerto Rico (1997-2019)

Abstract

Zines are independent, mostly low-cost, self-made publications, which can reflect the profound aesthetic concerns of their creators. These publications are often developed in relation to underground music scenes, such as punk. While these are mostly cisgender male-oriented environments, women have been publishing zines and comics in Puerto Rico since the 1990s, and their presence and visibility have also been on the rise. This article presents a herstorical approach to the contributions made by women‘s zines in the Puerto Rican archipelago, focusing on the specific themes and interests of their creators.
