Entre Atahualpa y San Juan: aspectos sorprendentes del mestizaje literario en Hispanoamérica

Abstract

The elegy "To the All-Powerful Inka Atawallpa", "Apu lnka Atawallpaman ", has been studied from various very interesting perspectives. Amongst them, its hybrid nature has been pointed out because, among other things, it follows a structure which revealingly draws it near European Literature. Nevertheless, the poem contains elements which suggest a possible influence between this Kechuan elegy and Saint John of the Cross' "Cántico espiritual". Through symbols such as the luminous eyes, the grieving dove and the deer, as well as, and still more importantly, their profound meanings, we will study the parallels that can be traced between these two poems, which, on the other hand, are so dissimilar. For that matter, we will try to underline the literary hybridness.
