Abstract
The first number of the University of Puerto Rico's Revista de Estudios Hispanicos was published eighty years ago in 1928. To commemorate this event, the Hispanic Studies Department has published a facsimilar edition of this first number. This first edition of the journal is an important document which reflects a very particular political and cultural historic situation. During these years the interests of U.S. "panamericanism", Spain's "panhispanism" and Puerto Rican intellectuals converge. Like the Hispanic Studies Department of the University of Puerto Rico, its journal was a result of the close collaboration between the Columbia University in New York, Centro de Estudios Hispánicos in Madrid, and the University of Puerto Rico, under the leadership of Dr. Federico de Onís, who was its director. This triangular collaboration, as well its tensions, is clearly reflected in the first edition of the journal. The cover's design, based on triangles, as well as the three main essays by the North American William Shepherd, the Spanish Salvador de Madariaga and the Puerto Rican Antonio S. Pedreira, as well as the notes and the reviews, reflect this triangular collaboration. Even though the weakest angle in this arrangement is Spanish America, represented by Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican collaborators Antonio S. Pedreira and José Padín distinguish themselves for their critical and assertive attitude. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
