Abstract

This work examines political socialization, political environment, and the impact both have on the political orientation of Puerto Rican migrants. I examine how the change in political environment given by migrating from one society to another changes the political orientations of individuals; furthermore, I examine how lasting is the impact that exposure to a different political system may have on the political orientations of political actors. Based on survey data of return migrants to Puerto Rico, I find that migrants are not resocialized while they are abroad. These migrants may become desocialized while in the receiving society; that is, their orientations may change from those exhibited in the society of origin; however, this desocialization does not have a lasting impact on the political orientation of migrants on their return to their country of origin. Migration does not result in the resocialization of migrant, by which he internalizes new political orientations, whether party identification or the strength of this partisan identification, even as he may be subject of political learning while migrating.
