Abstract
The debates on Puerto Rican national identity have been examined from the humanistic viewpoint. In this article those debates are analyzed from the Social Sciences, specially those published in the Revista de Ciencias Sociales from 1957 through 1967. An emphasis is made on the socioeconomic and political context of the academic debates and also, on the role of the so called Puerto Rican Model of Development –by invitation– in the formation of a new discipline, Developmental Studies. In this article, the sociological concept of hybridity is presented to discuss the study of identity in the social changes involved in the process of national development.Downloads
