Abstract

Since the 1940s, the population of Puerto Rico has experienced rapid, profound, and lasting transformations, especially a growing mobility both within and outside the Island. Between 1957 and 1990, the Revista de Ciencias Sociales published more than a dozen articles on migration in Puerto Rico. This essay focuses on studies of migration between Puerto Rico and the United States, and from Cuba and the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico. The author‘s basic objective is to analyze the main contributions of the articles published in the journal about these two topics, as well as to point out some of their theoretical and methodological limitations. The article is organized around the five disciplines that have paid more attention to migration on the Island: demography, anthropology, sociology, economics, and history. In synthesis, the Revista de Ciencias Sociales helped to divulge research that is fundamental to the analysis and understanding of diverse population movements in Puerto Rico. The published essays reflect some of the recurring concerns of the Island‘s social scientists between the 1950s and 1980s. The contemporary relevance of such questions suggests that, although many of the proposed responses are already obsolete or may be debated, much remains to be studied on population displacements between the Island and the diaspora.
