Abstract

The years 1939 to 1948 encompasses a little known and studied period of the economic history of Puerto Rico. During this time period, a military economy prevailed. This economy served to bridge the prior agricultural based economy and the latter industrial period. Some historians and sociologists call this period state or national capitalism. The article, on the other hand, propose that this period was predominantly dominated by the war economy of the United States, and that the Federal Government fueled the local economy. Also, the war economy facilitated the implementation of the latter industrial plan.
