Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to contribute to the study of the Inquisition in Puerto Rico in relation to the colonial society in the mid XVII century. The analysis demonstrates the inquisitorial processes implemented from 1654 until 1664 against the islands governor don Diego de Aguilera y Gamboa-who was accused of saying profane, irreligious and heretical blasphemies-, due to the fact that this institution was used by the islands elites to push their particular agendas, avenge frustrations that arose from disputes to ultimately exercise political and economical hegemony over the colony.
