Abstract
This work attempts to begin an academic "conversation" on the possibility of analyzing manifestations of masculinity in three Mendicant Orders in New Spain. the analysis takes three avenues of approach: l) the study of the representation of the "holy" man in the histories of the Orders. 2) the study of reality: the unholy and "sexed" man, as registered in the records of the Inquisition 3) the forms of exercising power, as a masculine trait, on such occasions as the elections within the Orders, using the altemating system between Spanish-born and criollos, known as alternativa, and the confrontation with the secular church in the process of secularization.
