Abstract

The author reviews Astrid Cubano‘s book from the perspectives of the Sociology of the Law and the Cultural Studies. The review focuses on the main assertion of the book, namely that towards the end of the nineteenth century the legal system of Puerto Rico provided modern categories with which the common folk of the island could evaluate their experiences and develop a legal conscience, particularly with respect to gender violence. The review questions the conclusion that by the end of the 19th Century the Rule of Law was established on the island.
