Abstract

This series of photographs from the early weeks of August 2019 document the white patches that swarmed the pastel walls of Old San Juan after two weeks of massive protests had amounted to a substantial collection of graffiti. Volunteers, local business owners, and municipal staff had taken to the streets once again to repaint the façades that had been covered with messages for the now former Governor. A new wave of civic activism had been launched in support of the old structures and businesses, but the patches were not an erasure of the messages that were written, but rather a testament to the to the tension and negotiations around the Old San Juan storefront—both private property and cultural heritage.
