Abstract

Gilles Deleuze stated that in Foucault‘s thought there is an intimate relationship between the visible and the sayable, that in this essay will be proposed, echoing Lyotard, as a discourse/figure relationship. We will explain Foucault‘s thesis, which affirms that there is a relation among the visible and the sayable, although the regime of the enunciable is different from the regime of the visible, therefore heterogeneous, are relatable. We will analyze the main works of the philosopher in which he illustrates his idea through references to painting and literature. From the tragic experience of madness, through the asylum, the museum, the library, El Bosco, Velázquez, Magritte, Brandt, Sade, Roussel, among others, we find in Foucault a rich and valuable inventory of occasions and comments to explain the relations concerning the word and the image.
