Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the film consumption practices of a large group of young Aruban students, ranging from 12 to 17 years, with special attention to the consumption of Caribbean cinema. This study is framed by an overview of the country‘s film exhibition system in which these consumption practices are inserted. During the study, even though general trends of the audience‘s behaviour were analysed, we tried to understand the symbolic dimension of these film-consumption practices and some of the factors that influence their features. This research is motivated by the need to deepen the study of the dynamics of film consumption in the Caribbean, as a tool for a more successful insertion of local content in both regional exhibition circuits and Caribbean audience‘s cultural tastes.
