Abstract

In the essay "From Grief to Diversity: Navigating Psychopathology with Cultural Sensitivity," it is explored how psychopathology, despite being guided by a biomedical model, is deeply influenced by cultural and contextual factors. It focuses on the diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder, highlighting the importance of considering the different ways in which various cultures experience grief and how there can be no single point of view for any diagnosis. It argues that grief is a unique and individual experience that should not be universally pathologised, unless a database can be created from a representative population and universal standards for measurement. In addition, she argues that it is crucial to adopt a more inclusive and culturally sensitive approach to psychology to adequately understand and treat the various manifestations of grief, respecting the diversity of human experiences.
