Joan Fayer has a BS in education and MA in literature from Temple University, and an MA and PhD in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. She has taught at UPR since 1964. She has published numerous articles and delivered numerous papers in the fields of linguistics and speech communication. She is a specialist in pidgin and creole languages.
